Keen amateur sportsman, John O’Meara was initially sceptical about how Pilates could help him improve his fitness. He said: “I am 6ft 4″ and had always had a weak back. Aged 44, my body was starting to feel the strain after a lifetime of too much sport, including regular golf, (struggling to maintain my 5 handicap) tennis and football. My wife was a Pilates addict and suggested I give it a go.
I have to admit that when I first heard of Pilates I thought it was something women with too much time on their hands did before a spot of shopping at Harvey Nicks.
I joined Flex Studios in Liverpool city centre, the studio my wife was so enthusiastic about. It is run by an ex professional ballet dancer who is Body Control Pilates® qualified and I immediately felt he had an in depth understanding of how my body should move, and what we were going to work on to achieve it.
I started with a studio session in the fully equipped machine studio -. Although the machines look quite daunting, within half an hour I felt muscles in my core working that I never knew I had. The machines are easy to use, because they focus the movements and target the muscles efficiently.
I am now going once a week. My understanding of what my core is and what it is meant to do has improved. As a result my posture is better, but more importantly for me I have got a better turn in my golf swing and I really am hitting the ball better and further. At the end of the game I don’t have that nagging back twinge I used to have. An unusual side effect has been that I am actually slightly quicker on the football pitch. OK my mates have described my ability to turn like watching a beached whale return to water (I am over 17 stone), there is definitely an improvement, and my stints in goal are marginally shorter.
I would recommend anyone who is serious about sport, and want to extend their playing days into old age - OK maybe settle for late middle age for the football - to give Pilates a go!”
