A Free Half-Day Taster Event 9.00am - 1 pm  Thursday 6th March 2008 at Calday Grange Grammar School, West Kirby, Wirral CH48 8GG

Merseyside businesses who want to develop their international language and communication skills are invited to attend a free trial ‘taster session’ in mastering basic Chinese. Don’t worry if you have little or no experience, the workshops are designed for people who have no previous knowledge of the language. Help and support will be available all the way through.

The first part of the session will introduce China as one of the world’s most dynamic overseas markets, and will provide insights into Chinese business culture and practice.  Keynote speakers will outline:

  • how to find Chinese business partners,
  • how to develop a productive working relationship, and
  • what grants are currently available to small and medium size Merseyside companies who want to develop business overseas

Delegates will then have the chance to sample the basics needed to communicate when travelling and meeting potential business partners.

These sessions will take place in two of the school’s state of the art Multimedia Language Suites. This is a fabulous opportunity for Merseyside businesses, and opens the door to a fuller intensive Business Chinese course later this year for those who wish to develop their knowledge further.

Lunch is provided 12.00 - 13.00pm

Artinliverpool present The Liverpool Art Prize 2008

The Liverpool Art Prize is a new annual exhibition and award for fine artists based in the Liverpool area.  This inaugural year’s event will be housed in a Grade II listed converted warehouse in the city’s ‘Independent Arts Quarter’, and will form an important addition to the calendar of events taking place during Liverpool’s year as European Capital of Culture 2008.

The prize is organised by Chamber members, artinliverpool, who issued a public call for nominations last year. From over 400 submissions, a panel of judges have selected a short-list of six artists to be put forward for this year’s prize.  The artists are all mid-career professionals who are currently establishing themselves on an international level. They are working in extremely diverse practices - from surround-sound installations, to Indian miniature painting - and have made significant achievements in the past few years. In spring 2008, key works by the short-listed artists will be displayed for 6 weeks in a dedicated exhibition in Liverpool city centre.  The venue is a 7,180 sq ft gallery space within the NOVAS Scarman Group’s prestigious new Contemporary Urban Centre North West. The Liverpool Art Prize will be the first event to take place in this important new development.

From the short-list, 2 prizes will be given:

The People’s Choice prize of £500 will be awarded from votes cast by the public, and will provide an opportunity for visitors to the exhibition to express their preference.

The main prize, a cash sum of £2,000, will be awarded to the over-all winner by a panel of judges. The announcement of the prizes will be made during an awards ceremony held on Sunday March 9th. This will coincide with international ‘Thank You Art’ day.   The exhibition and prizes will acknowledge the outstanding achievements of the artists and their contribution to contemporary art within Liverpool, as well as further afield. It aims to promote national awareness and discussion of contemporary art in the city and to support individual artists in developing their practices.

Artists: Mary Fitzpatrick, Gareth Kemp, Jayne Lawless, Emma Rodgers, The Singh Twins, Imogen Stidworthy. Exhibition Dates: February 29 to April 10 2008 (PV: Thurs February 28th, 6pm - 8pm)

Awards Ceremony: Sunday March 9th, 2pm - 5pm

Venue: Contemporary Urban Centre North West

Address:  41-51 Greenland Street, Liverpool L1 0BS
