cim_logoThe Merseyside branch of the Chartered Institute of Marketing is inviting Chamber members to come along to its next event in Liverpool, which takes place this Thursday, 4th February at the Liverpool University Management School.

The event on Loyalty Marketing features guest speaker, Richard Dutton, the man who brought you the 08 card - the exclusive membership card for Liverpool’s Capital of Culture. Richard is also responsible for the merging of this card with the LIVEONE20 membership card - the smart access to city life – and has rebranded the 08 card as the 08 VIP card.

Whilst at Livesmart, Richard oversaw the launch of four card schemes including the first contactless smart visitor city card in the world - Yourticketfor Liverpool - which is still the official visitor card for Liverpool.

Come along to the event to hear about how these loyalty schemes, and many others, were generated and the infrastructure to support them.

Important Changes To Development Consents & Planning Regulations

decc-logo-200The Department of Energy & Climate Change administers applications from developers seeking consent to build national energy infrastructure projects. This includes power stations, onshore and offshore renewables, overhead power lines, onshore underground gas storage and onshore pipelines. They also manage compulsory access arrangements through wayleaves and compulsory purchase orders (CPOs).

Important regulatory changes are being introduced from 1 March 2010:

Due to legislative changes introduced under the Planning Act 2008 the Infrastructure Planning Commission (IPC) will take over responsibility for processing new consent applications for the following nationally significant infrastructure energy projects from 1 March 2010 (consent applications received by DECC before 1 March 2010 will remain with DECC until a decision has been taken):

  • Electricity generating stations generating more than 50 megawatts onshore and 100* megawatts offshore
  • Electricity lines at or above 132 Kilovolts
  • Certain nationally significant gas infrastructure (see the Communities and Local Government: Planning Act 2008[external Link] web page for details)
  • Cross country oil and gas pipelines at or above the threshold of 16.093 kilometres/10 miles in length and certain licensed gas transporter pipelines

As a consequence of these regulatory changes developers will in future have to submit applications to the IPC under the Planning Act which replace the provisions of existing legislation.

A Cure For Skills Fade – The St John Ambulance Annual Refresher Course

st_johns_ambulanceResearch has shown that people who learn first aid start to lose their skills quite quickly after attending training. Skills fade occurs. This happens even when the initial training has been delivered by a provider who uses the latest educational techniques to make the experience memorable.

Garry Joynes, Training Delivery Co-ordinator with St John Ambulance explains: ‘During the St John Ambulance first aid courses, students are given a lot of time to practise and immerse themselves in first aid as a subject. However once the course is over, students can get very few chances to use their first aid skills, and therefore because first aid is such a practical subject, can forget some of what they have learnt on the course. The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) recognises ‘skills fade’ to be an issue, which is why they now strongly recommend business first aiders do an Annual refresher course to keep their skills in tip-top condition’.

In our litigious times, St John Ambulance is advising Chamber members to ensure their first aiders complete the Annual refresher course with a HSE-approved provider.

The St John Ambulance Annual refresher course is fully HSE compliant and has ISO 9001: 2000 accreditation. It gives First aid at work and Emergency first aid at work students an essential opportunity to practise and update their skills during their three year period as a qualified first aider. The course covers:

  • severe bleeding
  • communication and casualty care
  • emergencies at work
  • the primary survey
  • seizures
  • shock
  • unconscious casualty
  • adult resuscitation
  • and updates on any new first aid procedures and protocols

St John Ambulance’s refresher course is being praised by the local business community.

olympic-ringsChamber Member Adecco are looking for someone who could help one of the region’s hopefuls to Olympic glory:

Adecco have recently been appointed as official recruitment providers for London 2012 Olympic games.

As a result we have been working with the Athletes Careers Programme to assist Olympic Athletes in finding suitable part-time work to do in conjunction with their training. Without it they may not have the support to continue to train at that level.

Further information on the Athletes Career Programme can be found here:  http://athlete.adecco.com/Pages/Home.aspx

See also this link to the Adecco website that includes a video from Sebastian Coe talking about Adecco’s involvement in London 2012 - http://www.adecco.co.uk/

The local athlete we are supporting is James Dickens. James is a an Olympic hopeful who is a multi award winning boxer. James’ awards include European Union Youth Championships Gold medal, European Youth Championships Bronze medal and Commonwealth Youth Games Silver medallist, twice Junior ABA Champion, golden belt champion and twice GB Champion. James has also been GB team captain and has boxed in countries across the world. James is one of Liverpool’s brightest prospects and a realistic Olympic Champion.

We are looking for a local employer to support James in quest for glory by providing some part time work to fit around his training.

We provide this service free of charge to support local Olympic hopefuls and give local employers the chance to support and employ a rising star of the future. The Athletes are looking for paid employment and offer skills including team working and determination to succeed.
