Liverpool Chamber of Commerce is pleased at today’s announcement that the port of Liverpool will soon welcome cruise liners to the Mersey as a ‘turnaround’ location.
Our chamber, along with several of our neighboring chambers, have lobbied for this outcome for some time and we are glad that the DfT has recognized the benefits this will bring not just to Liverpool but also more widely to cruise holidaymakers in the North of England.
The UK is a European leader in the cruise market and this decision will grow the UK’s share of the cruise market even further. It will also lead the growth of the locally based supply chain to service cruise liners and their passengers – it’s good news all round for all local industry connected with tourism, particularly our hotels and visitor attractions.
The arrival of the 17,500 ton Ocean Countess cruise ship next week will be a fitting way of beginning this new era of shipping in Liverpool and we look forward to many more such vessels gracing the waterfront in the years to come.
