September 30th, 2011

south_korea_nightUKTI North West are inviting UK Chemicals/Materials businesses with an interest in South Korea to join a market visit to Seoul in March 2012.

Why South Korea?

Nestled between two great powers, Japan and China, South Korea remains off the radar to most UK companies, even though it is home to 50 million people generating a GNP of US$ 1 trillion – making it the world’s 12th largest economy and the 4th largest in Asia.

South Korea is also the latest country to agree a Free Trade Agreement (FTA) with Europe. This agreement, which took effect from July 2011, is the most comprehensive free trade deal ever negotiated by the EU eliminating duties on 98% of products.

Why Korean Chemical sector?

Korea is the world’s 5th largest producer of ethylene with an annual production of 7.3million tonnes.

The petrochemical industry accounts for approx. 5% of the country’s total manufacturing industry with the speciality chemical industry accounting for 3%.

Korea’s LCD and semiconductor industries, which have demands for chemicals, are ranked at the top level, brightening the prospect to attract foreign investment in the industry.

What is on offer?

The programme will be defined according to the type of companies and numbers of companies taking part but to give an indication:

  • Security of a group visit with recommended travel and accommodation itinerary*
  • Experienced on hand support from UKTI International Trade Adviser
  • UKTI Market Visit Support Grant of £860 for eligible North West businesses**
  • In-depth market research and identification of contacts in the market appropriate to your business supplied by your local UKTI via Overseas Market Introduction Service (this incurs an extra charge)***

We can check this on receipt of your expression of interest ***Should company numbers be enough progress with the generic seminar programs for printed electronics/low carbon automotive/green build these will be included in the registration fee. Additional bespoke contacts can be accessed via OMIS at extra cost.

Proposed initiatives:

Whilst the trade mission is open to all UK chemical / materials companies wishing to find business partners for their UK-origin or UK high value-added products, UKTI Korea would like to take advantage of their excellent connections with R&D / strategic departments at Samsung, LG, Hyundai, SK, Daelim Industrial etc, plus relevant centres of excellence and relations with key local stakeholders in these industries, to offer in-country programmes for three specific areas of opportunity:

  • Printed electronics
  • Low carbon automotive

Liverpool Chamber member’s livestock treats a worlwide hit

cows_saltNot all of the Cheshire salt gets used in gritting…

Liverpool Chamber members Tithebarn Ltd, who are based at Winsford, believe that their use of the extracted salt from the ancient sea beds is used in a much more interesting and productive way.

Pure Dried Vacuum Salt is a major ingredient in their award winning  “Rockie” mineral blocks. Blended with essential major minerals and trace elements these rock hard blocks are currently exported to over 40 countries worldwide. Livestock love the taste and aroma of the blocks and will readily lick them and ingest the vital nutrients, which will improve their appetites and digestion and help increase production of milk, meet and wool.

Export is vital to Tithebarn and currently some 80% of all blocks manufactured are shipped overseas. Of particular pride to the company is the development of the markets in S. E. Asia and especially the recently obtained order for 1000 tonnes of Rockies destined for China, a market that they have been trying hard to establish for the past 8 years.

Export Sales Executive, Denis Sowler is keen to develop new markets. He says “Currently on any given day we have over 1million livestock licking our Rockies”
