What can Wayne Rooney teach us about corporate culture?

Quite a lot, actually…….

Are we really surprised at the latest stories about Wayne Rooney?

Would we be surprised about similar stories about other Premiership footballers?

If the accusations against Rooney turn out to be true, what, if anything, do we expect the repercussions against him to be from his paymasters at club and national level?

How surprising is it, if we think about it, that some Premiership footballers seem to think it is normal to behave in certain ways with regard to relationships, alcohol, public smoking and road traffic offences?

You see, the big misunderstanding about organisational culture is that we too often think it only comprises good practice that gets neatly ticked off in the background of already successful organisations and companies: it’s like a desirable but optional extra to reward and recognise those organisations who are already getting things right.

In fact, corporate culture directly relates to how we think we should behave and how we in fact do behave. Tied in to this are other peoples’ expectation of how we behave and their moral reactions to how we behave. Corporate culture comprises the unwritten rules of the game.

And corporate culture is as much about the bad that goes on as the good. There is no such thing as an organisation without a strong corporate culture: it can strongly be related to getting things wrong, it can be strongly tied to mediocrity, or it can be a strong and constant urge towards doing good things together.

How does it work in your workplace? Do people expect the worst of you and do you expect to get away with the worst? Is it a dirty and bumpy playing field, with people running around but getting nowhere – a lot of bumping, barging and fouling?

Or is it a smoother place altogether, with fast, decisive, productive and satisfying teamwork – plenty of goals being met?

Or are you just scoring loads of own goals, at both a personal and an organisational level?

Chamber member Malcolm Evans is a corporate culture specialist who is presenting a second 60 Really Useful Minutes session at Liverpool Chamber on Friday October 1.

Malcolm will show delegates from organisations of all sectors and sizes (from ambitious start-ups, through SMEs and into major public and private organisations) how to sustain superior performance via higher participation and fulfilment. This is a must-attend masterclass in human motivation and organisational development.
