Merseytravel launches long awaited ‘Walrus’ smartcard

September 20th, 2011

walrusWalrus is the name of a new Smartcard which will allow public transport users, as well as day trippers to the city, to use a single card for all their journeys.

Neil Scales, Chief Executive of Merseytravel, said; “This launch signals a revolution in the way people pay for and use public transport. I believe Walrus will play a fundamental role in encouraging and inspiring local people and visitors to fully enjoy the economic, cultural, heritage and leisure experience this area has to offer, and in time become an important part of the identity of the region.

“Walrus will see the widest range of uses of any Smartcard in the country being fully integrated into all our varied forms of transport and ticketing, ultimately saving our customers time and money. We are aiming towards a network where people pass seamlessly through our stations and ferry terminals, while also being able to board buses and even buy a coffee.

“In London less than 2% of public transport journeys are paid for in cash, and while cash will always be an option, Walrus will be a far more convenient option for customers, drivers and operators alike.

“This is the first card of its type in the UK, encompassing both transport AND non-transport related products, and I believe this will revolutionise the way we travel in and enjoy this fantastic region and all it has to offer.”

Walrus is launched this weekend with the first products switching to the Smartcard versions. From today, passengers who renew their annual all-zone Trios can receive the Walrus card instead of the paper version we currently issue.

From Spring 2012 further products will be converted, with the full “pay as you go” card available from Summer 2013.

A new state of the art Mersey Ferries landing stage is currently under construction, scheduled to open in late autumn 2011 and Mersey Ferries are currently operating from the Liverpool Cruise Liner facility at Princes Parade, a short walk from the Pier Head Ferry Terminal.

Major overhaul planned for Liverpool underground stations

September 6th, 2011

merseytravellogoLiverpool Central to see major improvements

Liverpool’s five underground stations are to get a £40 million plus overhaul over the next few years starting with £20 million improvements to Central Station.

The work will improve access, particularly for disabled passengers and those with luggage or children in buggies, improve the passenger flow at platform level and generally refurbish all passenger areas.

It includes:

  • an additional lift
  • new escalators to the Northern Line platform
  • additional platform space
  • new, brighter cladding on the platform walls
  • larger and improved toilet facilities and waiting areas

The work in the concourse area will build on the recently completed MtoGo unit in the ticket hall. The walls and ceiling will have new, brighter cladding, the flooring will be renewed and there will lots of natural light as a clear glazed roof and glass external walls will be constructed. When the project is completed Liverpool Central will have undergone a complete refurbishment of all areas.

Bart Schmeink, Merseyrail’s Managing Director said: “Liverpool Central is the busiest station on the network and should be Merseyrail’s flagship station but as we all know, it certainly isn’t in its present state. This major overhaul is long overdue and the inevitable inconvenience of closing the station whilst the work is carried out will be well worth the wait. By autumn 2012 Liverpool Central will be a very pleasant place to catch your train. Liverpool Central will be fit to serve a city that itself has gone onward and upward over the last few years.”

Jo Kaye, Route director of Network Rail which is providing the bulk of the funding for the work, said precise dates are not yet available because contracts for the work have not been let but the station is expected to be closed from April to August next year (2012).

She said: ” The announcement is being made now to give passengers advanced notice that Central station will have to close for about four months while the improvements are made. With the number of people who use the station every day already making the platforms very crowded, it is simply impossible to carry out work on this scale and keep the station open. Train services will operate as normal - but they will pass through the station without stopping.”

Councillor Mark Dowd, chair of Merseytravel, said: ”I have campaigned long for these improvements because, quite simply, Liverpool Central is no longer fit for purpose. I have already warned it is approaching a situation where it will become dangerous to the travelling public. Without this development it would only be a matter of time before someone was hurt.”

Neil Scales, chief executive of Merseytravel, added: ”We are drawing up plans for alternative bus services for the duration of the work to minimise inconvenience to commuters and to shoppers.”

Liverpool city centre will remain fully accessible to shoppers and commuters through James Street, Moorfields and Lime Street stations

A frequent bus shuttle will operate to ensure the area around Liverpool Central can be reached easily by passengers using the three other city centre stations

Full extent of the works at Liverpool Central is:

  • Improved larger staff accommodation at the back of the station
  • Installation of a new lift adjacent to the current lift at Liverpool Central
  • Replace escalators
  • Relocate plant room to free up platform space
  • Install platform edge gates
  • Replace cladding
  • Replace floor coverings
  • Replace directional fire signage
  • Relocate fire doors
